Lockwood, now two lanes in each direction south of Harrisburg, would have one lane for most vehicles after the project is built. A pedestrian and bicycle path also would flow under the tracks, while automobile drivers still would cross the tracks at ground level. Buses would travel in their own lanes, separated from vehicular traffic.Ī Lockwood underpass would allow buses, and emergency vehicles if necessary, to drive below the Union Pacific Railroad tracks, which are another source of frustration for the East End community. The line would run from the Tidwell Transit Center, south along Lockwood to the University of Houston and Texas Southern University, then west mostly along Wheeler, Richmond and Westpark to the Westchase Park and Ride. The University Corridor will be the longest rapid transit line in Houston, if it is built and opens to riders in 2028, as expected by Metro. "We came to do the work and listen to the community and they meaningfully engaged, (but) I know it doesn't reflect all of the neighborhood's concerns." "Thirteen days ago we felt no one was listening," she said, referring to Metro's initial discussion about approving the route. Eastwood Civic Association, which led efforts to oppose the overpass, still was assessing what residents are thinking, following a Monday evening meeting, association president Danielle Laperriere said. What remains unclear is whether the change to the design and Metro's defense of its choice to operate the line along Lockwood will tamp down enough opposition to the project. A special meeting of Metro's board is scheduled for 2 p.m. The decision to ditch the planned overpass at Lockwood and Harrisburg, following weeks of discussion and at the urging of local elected officials, clears Metro to approve its preferred route for the University Corridor, the 25.3-mile backbone of planned bus rapid transit in the region. "We heard very loud and clear an overpass is not what you want," said Shri Reddy, executive vice-president for planning, engineering and construction for Metropolitan Transit Authority. 4-Metro officials have overcome concerns about an overpass on Lockwood, but have failed to calm all critics in Houston's East End as they plan to proceed with the region's longest rapid transit line.
